Pilate asked Jesus, “what is truth”
Then turned his back, standing aloof
And returned triumphantly to the crowd
To hear them gloriously shouting aloud
Perhaps it was a scoffing, mocking query
Or was this man momentarily wary?
Maybe, in fact, he didn’t want to hear
“Truth” directed at his ear
In giving in to the loud popular choice
Pilate ignored the quiet one true voice
Instead, he returned to the disruptive din
Just as we often return to our sin
